    RINGO STARR TURNS 72

Tomorrow (7/7), Ringo Starr turns 72 years old.  For almost all of those years, the Beatle has been playing the drums. But why does he do it?  He filled us in.

“I do it cause it goes back a long, long time where as a kid, I wanted to play drums, I wanted to play with good players and that’s what I do, I love to play.”

72 is a pretty high number, yet Ringo has been a grandfather since he was 44. However, the numbers and titles mean nothing to the rocker.

“You know, we live in that past where grandfathers were very, very old, you know what I mean, and now, it’s not the case.  People keep themselves together, which I do.”

Ringo isn’t slowing down and still spends massive amounts of time on the road.  So does he ever think about retiring?

“No.  I used to think retirement, probably when I was 40.  Now, I don’t think about it at all.  I’m just rocking on.”

Ringo will be spending his birthday on stage in Nashville with his All-Starr Band.  Get all his dates at RingoStarr.com.

    • TIDBIT: Ringo’s granddaughter, Tatia Starkey, is also a performer who goes by the stage name Veronica Avant.  Her dad is Zak Starkey, the sometimes drummer for The Who.

That’s quite a nice offer from the singer, who has more than 21-million followers who could potentially take advantage. Katy Perry: Part of Me will hit theaters July 5th.

ONE DIRECTION ACCUSED OF “PIMPING ISLAM”

Schlussel wrote regarding Malik’s tweets about Ramadan and Allah: “He knows the power he has over these mindless girls and is using that influence to preach the Islamic faith. It’s dangerous.”  Screenwriter Wajahat Ali fired back at her claims, praising Malik for being an artist and following his faith, writing, “A guy like [Malik] can…convey that as a generation we are moving ahead.”

    HOW NICKELBACK DEALS WITH HATERS

Nickelback have sold millions of albums and sell out arenas all over the world, yet it seems hipsters and many bands love to hate the hard rocking Canadian group. They were recently mocked by an Idaho newspaper that suggested fans spent 45 dollars on a bag of hammers to hit themselves with instead of paying to see the band live, and The Black Keys also took a jab at the band recently.  Frontman Chad Kroger told the Edmonton Journal that they take the criticism in stride and “laugh” while they do it.  He added that he doesn’t think the band will receive any awards for their music, saying, "We may be dead by then but I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will probably show up the same time as our first GRAMMY."  Nickelback have been nominated for six GRAMMYS including Record of the Year for “How You Remind Me,” back in 2003, but the group has yet to win the coveted award.  The band will take the stage in Tacoma, Washington on Saturday night.

London’s The Mirror reports that the 90-minute Spice Girls documentary, which intends to be a warts and all look at the Spice Girls’ rise to fame, is being considered at the moment. FACTS ABOUT ED SHEERAN

U-K native and major label newcomer Ed Sheeran is a quadruple threat. With five singles under his belt, last week, the singer, songwriter, rapper and producer released his debut full-length, + (pronounced: “plus”). Meanwhile, he’s tearing up the road on tour through the end of the year. For those unfamiliar with the internationally-acclaimed Sheeran, here are five things to know:

    • ·        He loves chicken. After name-dropping international chicken chain Nando’s in a viral video with fellow Brit singer Example, Sheeran earned himself a Nando’s Black Card, which gets him free food there for life.
    • ·        He’s a Lego master. Not only does Sheeran have a single called “Lego House,” but he also likes toying with the building blocks in his free time, too. He told PerezHilton.com that he usually makes a couple Lego figurines before his shows to give to fans.
    • ·        He’s a philanthropist. Sheeran puts his music to work, having teamed up with U-K charities that benefit street workers and homeless shelters.

    • ·        He hangs with wizards. When Sheeran was casting for his “Lego House” music video, his sights were set on lookalike Rupert Grint. So he enlisted the help of his Twitter buddy, Tom Felton, who plays “Draco Malfoy” in the Harry Potter series to hook him up.

Paul went on to explain why he thinks it is that he feels that way.

“I do do a bit of exercise but it’s not like heavy work out.  I’m vegetarian, I don’t know, that might have something to do with it.  So I feel pretty good in myself, I really don’t know if that’s to do with it.  I have romance in my life, I think that’s a lot to do with it.  That’s a good thing, a good woman.  I feel really good.  I feel very fit.  I don’t know why particularly, but I just do.”

McCartney added that older folks in the music industry inspire him.

“I look at people like Quincy Jones, Quincy is amazing.  I look at people like B.B. King, I look at a lot of my heroes and I think, ‘Man, they’re quite a bit older than me.  How do they do it?’  And they do!  They’ve got this energy, they’ve got this love of life, love of music.  And I think music’s a big part of it.”

RINGO STARR’S CHILDHOOD HOME SAVED FROM DEMOLITION

Ringo Starr’s childhood home in Liverpool has been saved from the wrecking ball.  According to England’s Telegraph, the run-down three-bedroom house was marked for demolition but because the drummer lived there for three months as an infant, Beatles fans and some city residents successfully lobbied to save the home.  While the National Trust of England did not feel the house merited saving because Ringo lived there so briefly, the Liverpool City Council has let it stay.  Read all about it at Telegraph.co.uk.

    • ·        TIDBIT: When ruling against saving the home, the National Trust of England said that they did not have the means to acquire the 12 plus houses where the Beatles lived as children.
