Silence of the Lambs moth on the wing for Halloween

A rare moth with skull an crossbones markings, that was used to illustrate horror film Silence of the Lambs, will be on the wing this Halloween.

The death’s head hawk-moth is the largest moth to appear in Britain, sporting a wingspan of up to 5 inches.

The unusual insect arrives in Britain from southern Europe in late summer and autumn - just in time for Halloween.  Most chillingly, if handled, it emits a loud, shrill squeak by forcing air out of its proboscis – the long, tube-like appendage that butterflies and moths normally use to suck nectar.
