BEST ORIGINAL SONG OSCAR CATEGORY EXPANDS BACK TO FIVE NOMS

The Academy Awards have changed the rules regarding the Best Original Song category.  This past year, only two songs were nominated for the Oscar: “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets, which won the award, and “Real in Rio” from Rio. Songs from Elton John, Madonna and P!nk, did not make the cut, which led to a lot of complaints.  According to Billboard, after a few years of using a scoring system to choose the nominees, a new voting procedure has been developed.  Now voters will watch clips of the films featuring the songs and will vote for five songs.  The top five most-chosen songs will be nominated for the award.  There are some other stipulations that could cut back on nominees.  If there are 25 or fewer qualified songs submitted, the branch's executive committee can recommend to the board that nominations be limited to three. And if there are nine or fewer qualifying works, the committee can recommend that no award be given that year. Last year, 39 songs were submitted in the category, so barring a dramatic decline in the number of songs under consideration, the category should be able to field five nominees.
