The Titanic star attended a ceremony at London royal residence Buckingham Palace to receive the accolade, which she branded ""incomparably overwhelming"".
She says, ""The sense of gravity is enormous and you very much feel you are being acknowledged by the whole country in a way. There is something incomparably overwhelming about that.""
The Queen asked Winslet how much she enjoys acting, and the star recalls, ""I said yes I liked it but not as much as being a mother. She said, 'It is the best job'.""
Take That star Gary Barlow was also honoured at the ceremony - he was presented with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal by the reigning monarch.
Barlow said he was ""deeply proud"" to land the OBE and admitted the honour ""hadn't seemed real until today"".
Earlier this year (12), the pop singer wrote a commemorative song and planned London's star-studded Diamond Jubilee Concert for the royal in recognition of her 60 years on the throne.
