DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth is celebrating its 125th Anniversary by illuminating the front of the hospital on East 3rd Street with a blue light. The display will begin Monday night and continue for a week. The hospital is also unveiling a permanent mural that highlights the history of the facility. St. Mary's was founded in 1888 at 20th Avenue West and 3rd Street and was staffed by seven Benedictine Sisters. Less than ten years later, a new 200 bed hospital was built at 5th Avenue East and 3rd Street. Over time additional wings were added and the original building was replaced. The current 380 bed hospital employs 2700 people and is the largest hospital in northeastern Minnesota.
