ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) - A fungus that could be deadly to bats has been confirmed at Soudan Underground Mine State Park and Forestville-Mystery Cave State Park by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  The fungus is known to cause white-nose syndrome, a harmful and mostly fatal disease that has decimated bat populations in the eastern U-S and Canada.  The DNR is stepping up efforts to try and slow the spread of the fungus which is transmitted from bat to bat but spores may be inadvertently carried to caves by humans.  Public tours at the State Parks will continue by visitors will begin the tours with a brief lesson on how they can prevent the spread of the fungus.  Following the tour, visitors will walk across special mats designed to remove any spores from their footwear.  The syndrome is not know to pose a threat to humans, pets or other wildlife.  It is estimated that the Soudan Underground Mine has 10 to 15 thousand bats
