UNDATED (KDAL) - A new study shows that shipping goods in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway region is more fuel efficient and emits fewer greenhouse gases per thousand cargo-ton miles than land based transportation. The study also calculated that a shift from marine to road or rail modes of transport would lead to additional traffic congestion, higher infrastructure costs and greater levels of noise. Mark Barker, the President of the Interlake Steamship Company says the study provides additional data that will help the industry to continue to reduce its environmental footprint.
