DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Nine-hundred-nineteen participants had registered for the 2013 Duluth Polar Bear Plunge by mid-morning Saturday. Plungers will brave the cold weather to support the Special Olympics lakeside in Canal Park at 3 p.m. today, when temperatures are expected to reach the mid-teens. This is Duluth's 13th plunge, which is in its 16th year statewide. Latecomers can check in between noon and 3 p.m. today at Grandma's Sports Garden. A free shuttle bus will be available for all participants and spectators starting at noon through the end of the plunge; it will run every 15 minutes from the Sports Garden. Last year's 1,004 plungers garnered $169,316 for the Special Olympics.
