UMD Leads the Way in State Polar Plunge Money

DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Nearly 1,000 people made a very cold leap to support Special Olympics Minnesota at Saturday's Polar Bear Plunge in Duluth. And it might be too early to call it, but UMD is leading the way in the state for fundraising by schools during this plunge season by about $2,000 over second-place University of Minnesota.

That doesn't surprise Bill Vouk of the Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity. His crew raised the most among UMD teams, with Vouk leading the way with $750 raised. His cohort, Bridget Dolphin, raised $605. A recent transplant to Duluth, Dolphin said UMD could definitely win the fundraising race because the community is so tight-knit and student groups here especially are very gung-ho about their fundraising.

Duluth Polar Bear Plunge Director Todd Kuusisto said plungers raised about $170,000 this year, edging slightly the totals from last year.
