Antibacterial Ingredient Found In Minnesota Lakes

UNDATED (KDAL) - A University of Minnesota study released this week shows a common ingredient in antibacterial soaps and other products is ending up in state lakes including Lake Superior.  Triclosan is making its way through water treatment plants and has been found in sediments of several waterways including the Duluth harbor and eight miles out in Lake Superior.  The chemical interacts with the chlorine in treatment plants and sunlight to create harmful dioxins.  Lead author of the study, William Arnold, says consumers need to restrict their use of products containing triclosan and says washing with regular soap and water is just as effective in killing bacteria and is safer for the environment.
