DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - The Essentia Health-Duluth Clinic building on 1st Street will be the place to go for an up-close and very personal look at a colon. As part of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a large inflatable colon will be open for self guided tours from 8 a-m to 4 p-m on March 5th and 6th. This colossal colon features the healthy pink tissue of a normal bowel and also depicts bulging growths called polyps and the bright red mass from advanced colon cancer. Colon cancer is the number two cause of cancer deaths in the U-S and each year, more Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer than the populations of Duluth and Superior combined. The earlier colon cancer is caught the greater the possibility of a cure. A colonoscopy is recommended for everyone starting at age 50 and even sooner if there is a family history of the disease. The giant colon will also be appearing at Essentia Health in Virginia on March 11th and at Essentia St. Mary's Hospital in Superior on March 15th.
