DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - On Thursday, May 2nd, Duluth Police and investigators with the Lake Superior Drug and Violent Crimes Taskforce were conducting surveillance at a residence in the 3900 block of West 5th Street. As the resident and subject of the investigation was returning home, he noticed an unmarked squad car, rammed it with his vehicle and fled by driving through a playground across the street. Several citizens called to report the suspect's vehicle had crashed near 57th Avenue West and Medina Street. The suspect, 38 year old Nino Alonzo Franklin, was located a short distance away from the crash and arrested. Investigators retraced the route Franklin took while fleeing on foot and found 4600 dollars that he had discarded. Police also found over 13 grams of heroin, scales, packaging and other evidence of drug sales and two guns at his residence. Franklin has been charged with 1st degree possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and 2 counts of possession of a firearm by a felon. He has several convictions in Minnesota for burglary and domestic assault dating back to 2005.
