It's been streaming online for several days now, but Katy Perry finally releases her new album PRISM today. And, as promised, it's a far cry from the lighthearted fun of her last disc, Teenage Dream . In fact, Katy says that what initially inspired the record was feeling as though she'd been "punched in the face."
The first song that Katy wrote for PRISM was "By the Grace of God," which depicts her depression and anguish after the end of her marriage to Russell Brand . "I was in bed for about two weeks...it hurt a lot," Katy tells the Sunday Times of London . "What I wanted to call this record at first was A dult Reality, because Teenage Dream was me so high on that cotton-candy cloud, and then it's like I got punched in the fact and kicked down the stairs a couple of times. I had to face the reality that things are not always on cloud nine."
As Katy explained to London's Capital FM , "I was just in a darker period. That's why when I said I was going to make a darker record..I was in that period of my life. But then I did a lot of, kind of, introspective work and self-reflection and let a lot of beautiful, positive, reflecting things inside."
That's why a lot of the songs on PRISM are themselves introspective, as well as spiritual and emotional. Many of them also reflect her happiness in her current relationship with John Mayer . Summing up the difference between her last record and PRISM , Katy told British talk show host Graham Norton , "I think the last record was very highly conceptual and cartoony and over the top, and this one -- I guess I'll still be over the top in some ways, especially visually -- but this one is a little bit more vulnerable and raw and a lot more present."
"I think I'm OK with accepting the information that I'm finally a grown-up and I think that is represented on the record," she added.
Bonnie McKee , who co-wrote many of Katy's previous #1 hits, and co-wrote four songs on PRISM , including "Roar ," agrees that the new album shows a different side of the singer.
"It's just not as cute, you know?" she tells ABC News Radio. "It's just a little more real and a little bit darker. And it's...yeah, it's very sophisticated, I'd say."
It seems that Katy's new-found sophistication will also be expressed in the looks she'll be sporting, style-wise, for PRISM . While she does wear a jungle-print bra and banana skirt in the video for "Roar," she says in general, she wants to keep things a little bit more covered-up this time around. "I just, I like clothes to stay on for right now," she told Graham Norton. "I already took my clothes off in Teenage Dream !"
