Duluth, MN (KDAL) - There’s a new Grandma’s Marathon men’s course record holder. On a chilly, foggy Saturday—prime running conditions marathon runners will tell you—Kenya’s Dominic Ondoro eclipsed Dick Beardsley’s record by 31 seconds, at 2:09:06. Beardsley, whose record stood for 33 years, has longtime held that a runner would eventually top the mark. In following Ondoro’s run, Beardsley said he was amazed at how the 26 year-old increased his speed and was able to maintain the pace the rest of the way. In the last mile Beardlsey jumped out of the lead vehicle and cheered Ondoro on telling him, “You can do it!” Ondoro takes home a total of 15-thousand dollars, including the 10-thousand dollar purse and five-thousand dollar time incentive. He plans on using the money to invest into his village in Kenya, including build a school.
