Duluth, MN (KDAL) - As hard as this might be to believe given how long, cold and snowy our winter has been—the first laker is expected to leave the Port of Duluth-Superior this weekend. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority says the Carson J. Gallaway and the Presque Isle are expected to depart Saturday for Two Harbors. The Great Lakes Fleet carriers will be loaded with iron ore pellets destined for the lower lakes. A third carrier that wintered in the Twin Ports, the John G. Munson, is expected to join them in Two Harbors Sunday or Monday. All three have reinforced hulls designed to withstand significant ice pressure. The three carriers will be escorted in a convoy across the lake by the Coast Guard icebreakers Mackinaw, Morro Bay and Katmai Bay, which, at last check, were cutting tracks across the lake from the Soo Locks to Duluth.
