Duluth, MN (KDAL) - Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that heavily damaged a Gary home Wednesday afternoon. The Duluth Fire Department says the blaze in the 13-hundred block of 99th Avenue West was reported by one of the residents, who had just returned and spotted smoke billowing from the two-story structure. She heard her dogs barking inside, opened the door to let them out and discovered that a wall in the kitchen was on fire. She shut the door and called 9-1-1. Fire fighters knocked down the flames in the first and second floors. They also rescued three cats discovered in the basement. Fortunately, there were no injuries and the cats were unharmed. While they don’t know how the fire sprang to life, investigators say it began nearby the kitchen and spread through the wall into the second floor and up to the roof. Damage estimates are at $50,000.
