Duluth. MN (KDAL) - An Iowa woman is safe and sound after she got lost on an island in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says rescuers were first alerted to an emergency GPS beacon in the BWCA just after midnight Monday morning. There they found an elderly couple who was trying to help a large camping group locate someone who had gone missing from their party. 40 year-old Janene Lee Stewart wondered away from her group’s campsite the previous evening. She was up in the BWCA with 18 others from a community college in Iowa. Several hours later, as they were amassing resources to help with the search, Stewart was located just before noon by her own camping party unhurt. She told rescuers that she had walked away from the campsite and when it got too dark, she decided to stay in her location and wait until daylight to find her way back.
