ST. PAUL, MN (MNN) – Besides the law allowing recreational marijuana in Minnesota, several other measures passed by the legislature take effect on Tuesday.
A new Minnesota statute requiring a background check on all private transfers of pistols and semi-automatic military-style assault weapons is among the controversial crime-related laws that take effect.
Also controversial, a program that could reduce many inmates’ prison sentences up to 17 percent if they make sufficient progress in substance abuse or sex offender treatment, mental health programs, or on education or employment plans.
Less controversial is a new law that, with a few narrow exceptions, prohibits possession of a catalytic converter detached from a vehicle, and bans scrap metal dealers from purchasing detached converters without I-D markings that can connect it back to a vehicle.
Another new law going into effect August 1st makes it illegal to use “deep fake” computer technology to alter sex-related images to make it seem like someone is doing something they did not actually do.
