DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Minnesota Power customers that have difficulties paying their electric bill this winter has an option to keep the power on.
The Cold Weather Rule is in effect from October 1st through April 30th each year and allows customers to agree to a payment plan to prevent a disconnection of service.
Minnesota Power customers can call 800-228-4966 to set up a payment plan if they have a past due balance or are struggling to pay their bill.
In addition to programs and discounts offered by power companies, customers may also be eligible for the federal Energy Assistance Program (EAP) through the State of Minnesota.
On average only 20 percent of eligible customers apply for that assistance which is available at mn.gov/home.
Minnesota Power is also reminding customers about scam phone calls that threaten to shutoff the power unless immediate payment is received. Minnesota Power does not ask for credit or debit card numbers or threaten disconnection over the phone.
