DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – After a successful prescribed cultural burn at the end of Park Point was held on Thursday, the City of Duluth will conduct a controlled burn Friday in a designated natural area of Hartley Park.
The Minnesota Point fire was done by the Department of Natural Resources in partnership with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the City of Duluth.
It was the first cultural burn at that site in 200 years and Fond du Lac elders held a drum and offering ceremony to mark the start of the project called Returning the Spirit of Good Fire to Minnesota Point.
The controlled burn Friday at Hartley Park will temporarily close the Superior Hiking and Nordic Ski trails in the burn area.
Such prescribed fires are a land management strategy that mimics natural fire cycles, promotes ecosystem balance and knocks back any invasive species.
Duluth firefighters will be on the scene managing the burn and will remain until the fire is completely out without the threat of re-igniting.
