BALKAN TOWNSHIP, MN (KDAL) – Ground was broken by St. Louis County leaders on Thursday for a new Central Range Transportation Facility.
The 40 million dollar project will be located in Balkan Township, northeast of Hibbing, and serve the central range area including Hibbing, Chisholm and surrounding communities.
The new facility for public works operations will house road maintenance equipment and feature mechanic bays, office space and separate buildings for brine making and other de-icing materials.
The county has outgrown its current facility in Hibbing that is shared with the city and MnDOT.
The new Transportation Facility is funded by revenue from the county transportation tax and is expected to be complete by the fall of 2027.
