DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Superior National Forest has reopened additional recreation sites in the western portion of the forest.
As of Friday, 29 boating, camping, hiking and other sites will again be open for public use.
However, three popular campgrounds in the area will remain closed due to the ongoing fire suppression efforts. Fenske Lake and Jeanette Campgrounds off the Echo Trail and the Fall Lake Campground off the Fernberg Road are closed until conditions improve.
Campfires are now allowed in the open developed recreation sites and designated campgrounds with metal fire rings.
Meanwhile, overall fire acreage remains at 64,076 acres in northeastern Minnesota with over a thousand assigned fire fighting personnel working to contain the fires that started by lightning strikes on July 6th.
